Extending the Spatio-Temporal Applicability of DISPATCH Soil Moisture Downscaling Algorithm: A Study Case Using SMAP, MODIS and Sentinel-3 Data

DISPATCH is a disaggregation algorithm of the low-resolution soil moisture (SM) estimates derived from passive microwave observations. It provides disaggregated SM data at typically 1 km resolution by using evaporative efficiency (SEE) estimated optical/thermal collected around solar noon. based on relationship between evapo-transpiration rate and surface under non-energy-limited conditions hence well adapted for semi-arid regions with generally low cloud cover sparse vegetation. The objective this paper to extend spatio-temporal coverage 1) including more densely vegetated areas 2) assessing usefulness thermal earlier in morning. Especially, we evaluate performance Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) instead SEE over (called vegetation-extended DISPATCH) quantify increase Sentinel-3 (overpass 09:30 am) MODIS 10:30 am 1:30 pm Terra Aqua, respectively) data.
